- mikewarot 4y ago>In case anyone thinks NY Times opinion of anything tech related is worth a damn these days Here's the NYT doing Google a big favor, by diverting attention from a very pressing issue with Google search, Religious Discrimination inherent in their services. >Then there’s Google’s LaMDA, an A.I. model that made headlines a couple of months ago when Blake Lemoine, a senior Google engineer, was fired after claiming that it had become sentient. It was his whistle-blowing in relation to religious issues[1], something Google can't really fix, but legally MUST fix, that put them into a huge bind. "The suspension came a day after he handed over documents to a US senator, which Lemoine claimed contained evidence that Google's technology had been involved in instances of religious discrimination, The New York Times previously reported." 1 - https://news.yahoo.com/suspended-google-engineer-believes-companys-150324256.html
- ctoth 4y agoSurreal to see the NYT linking to Lesswrong. Pretty cool though. Comments on this article are currently quite disappointing, with several jabs at the NYT. What I don't see are any substantial critiques of the actual article. I think the main points it makes, that we need to do better at communication and the media should also try and better-relate progress are good ones. I also think that for most people who aren't clued in with the current SOTA results, someone with, say, a 2018-understanding of AI, the current progress is remarkable and shouldn't be downplayed/poo-pooed just because you might have a better understanding of how the systems work.
