My anecdotal experience owning several homes that have had systems fail is that HVACR companies are driving the throw-out. I've repaired 3 systems that my local HVAC company wanted to replace.
HVACR is back-breaking labor, and as labor prices rise I don't see these companies wanting to do repairs. It's much easier and profitable for them to replace systems. Energy efficient fully variable systems are north of 15k each. Just the other day I saw an HVAC ad for new systems in terms of monthly payment instead of total install cost.
I'm sure there is value in researching solid refrigerant barocaloric systems. But I think a lot lower hanging fruit is available to address. off the top of my head: aluminium coils (don't rust), shorter line sets (less energy lost) with better insulation, fully variable compressors becoming more cost effective, not putting air handlers in the attic, thicker insulation in houses, a focus on easy repairability, etc. From what I have seen with the newer systems is the companies like Carrier/Trane/Lennox/et al are trying to make the systems as non repairable as possible.
