There were a few different studies in this article but the first one sounds like an entire night of no sleep. I’m not very observant when missing that much sleep so their conclusion (that we’re mean when we miss a whole night) matches my own self.
The second two studies were more interesting with a very modest amount of sleep loss but also showed a very modest effect.
What I’m most interested in sleep loss is in performance management. How grumpy we are is one thing but I can easily lose a whole day of work if I miss a few hours a few nights in a row. I would love to see more data on this.
- DiggyJohnson 4y agoOh boy do I have the book for you then… Why We Sleep by Dr. Matthew Walker is both the best book on the subject by the eminent researcher in the field, but also an extremely good read.
- whitepirate20 4y agoI love this book. I often tell people it’s my favorite non fiction. My lack of sleep lately wants me to read it again.
- IceDane 4y agoHas this book not been essentially debunked? Apparently it's full of errors and downright misrepresented results.
- DiggyJohnson 4y agoNo I don’t believe it has. I’m sure it gets some facts wrong, but I’m kinda tired of every nonfiction book being considered “debunked” for errors in details of a book-length work.
- pedalpete 4y agoWe work in the Sleep Performance space, improving the efficiency of deep sleep (https://soundmind.co https://soundmind.co). It's astounding how a few hours disrupted sleep impacts many aspects of your life. Some of the more interesting aspects I find are: * Increased insulin resistance and craving of sugary and fatty foods (the brain wants cheap energy) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7151045/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7151045/ * Sleep loss results in elevated cortisol levels, which results in lack of sleep https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9415946/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9415946/ * Lower HRV https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2021.642548/full https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2021.6425...
