I have seveal reactions to this article.
First, thank you Caitlin Flanagan and The Atlantic generally for actually acknowledging that erosion of free speech in the US is mostly being caused by the Left. This is significant because in recent years, The Atlantic has drifted leftward. (Yes, I know all American media not explicitly conservative tend to lean left, but The Atlantic, in the late 20th century, for example, tried to be balanced. Case in point: "Dan Quayle was right".)
Second, I hope people in general are beginning to see that, at the present moment anyway, free speech is being limited by social media attacks and cancellation more than it is by the government. If you complain, for example, about HN's downvote feature, saying that it stifles free speech, you will invariably get some affronted response to the effect that the First Amendment does not apply to private platforms -- or even to the chilling actions of private individuals. But that is just wrong. If we want to enjoy free speech it's a gift we all have to give to each other.
Finally, I'm a West coast guy, admittedly, but what's with the hate against Cornell? I've never heard anything but praises for it (except for the weather there, of course). I think there's even a recipe for healthy bread that originated there.
