I was at Amazon for over 10 years. I think it’s a horrible place to work, and I regret the toll it took on my physical and mental health and my personal relationships.
Maybe we should be alarmed by this deal. Here’s my insider view.
AWS is about the only place at Amazon where real innovation is happening. The rest of the company is drowning in a black hole of technical debt, including: poor code, half-baked designs, and even worse business decisions from MBAs… like trying to get Alexa to sell you shit. It’s a cringy, idiotic experience.
And the other challenge is that a lot of talented people already worked at Amazon and don’t want to come back. Hiring engineering talent is only getting harder and harder. It turns out engineers don’t like being treated like shit.
At this point, Amazon’s only safe hiring pipeline is Indian immigrants, who often don’t even have an H1B. They have to jump through hoops to quit and have to leave the country if they do. In my time there, Amazon used them and extracted and squeezed every bit it could from them.
What innovation would you expect from such a place? So main focus now is hope that someone else doesn’t come eat their lunch and grow inorganically. The CDO tech stack is garbage, with endless projects that drive promotions.
