This isn't new and is true of any car whether it's powered by coal or gas or hydrogen or whatever. I have the "off road" version of the truck I own. It has knobbier tires than stock but not the drive through a 6' swamp that you are picturing. I pay a MPG penalty - that I would guess is less than the range penalty for an EV, but I do so because I am in fact driving off-road or in snow on a fairly regular basis.
