Intel leans on more E-cores for performance boosts in leaked 13th-gen CPU lineup
- rektide 4y agoThe 15-30W "low power" -U variants show this even more than higher-power cores Ars shows. i3 is 2+6 cores, i5 and i7 are 2+8 cores[1]. 4/5ths E-/atom cores!! I for one am excited to see Atom cores make a comeback. I hope we see ram on package show up too, for much smaller footprint systems. Intel's LakeField SoC (2020; ex: i5-L16G7) was 1+4 and won quite a number of contests it faced against the best Qualcomm tablet 8cx chips[2], largely because of it's long but vast single performance core (and did not bad at all in general, considering it was down -4 cores net). And what a tiny/simple way to build a stupid-fast ultra-low-power computers. Having everything on package is amazing. Just add power, you've got a computer. Fantastic. Intel talked a lot today about Meteor Lake, starting to come online ("2022Q2") & ship next year, which is replete with chiplets for CPU, SoC, GPU, I/O fanout[3], but lo, ram does not appear to be mentioned. For most systems, discrete ram is the most flexible option, but wow, for ultra-portable & easy to build & lower power, on-package ram is so so so excellent. I hope it comes back!!!!
