I think that some people don't factor in the amount of their time it takes to buy a new computer and get it set up sufficiently so the old computer is no longer needed. In addition to the cost of a new computer and environmental concerns, also remember the value of your time.
BTW, the guy who wrote this article John Scalzi is a very good sci-fi/humor author - I have a bunch of his books.
- em-bee 4y agothat is one good reason why i don't rush to buy a new computer. when i replaced my computer the last time, the old one was 10 years old. (and we were moving, so i dropped the old computer before and got the new computer after the move. that way i offset the work on the new computer with not having to bother moving the old one. (i kept the monitors though, and i took the disks with the data)) i built the new one myself. technically i could have reused the case, but i wanted a smaller case anyways. (i really miss the pizzabox form factor. current cases are either to big, or they can only hold one disk (i need two for mirror raid)) but now i am moving again, and this time i can't take the monitors with me. they are just to large, and shipping is not an option. i probably can take the case because it is a smaller one. but instead of buying new monitors, i am considering just getting a laptop instead. i'll need one anyways so i can travel for work. but that means external disks (2x5TB) if i don't take the case too. though choices. John Scalzi: i read redshirts some time ago and recently the kaiju preservation society. very enjoyable!
