Instead of cleaning out "some" apps, I would have suggested a complete wipe and clean install of his OS (after backing up, of course).
Better yet, an SSD is always a great speed upgrade (I'm assuming he has a mechanical HD), as well as adding/upgrading RAM. They can really breathe life back into old computers.
