If it uses 500W it must be a heck of a TV. My last-gen plasma doesn't use more than 180. Simple solution is to just turn the TV off when you're not watching it. Cut viewing time back to 1-3h/day and you're under 200 euro's per year. Don't forget that large LCD TV's use more power too, so you're not going to be able to save all of that by replacing it with an LCD.
