Not sure about the flash/NVMe thing. We can speed up specific type of computation by making it parallel, and use special circuits to implement the computation rather than using a general purpose circuit. The idea is that a general purpose circuit has overhead, such as instruction decoding, pipelining, unused area for other functionalities, which can be eliminated if we just want to implement a specific computation.
