As someone who was also raised deeply religious but has since abandoned the belief, I echo your feeling that there are very valuable ego disillusion and ethics lessons that need to be extracted from the dogma of religion. It's to the point where I'm sometimes shocked by the extreme ego and lack of moral framework in some of my friends and peers who were raised purely secular.
