I don't know what mailto links would open on my computer but it's not my web-based email client. I think it opens a local executable that came installed by the OS? I don't even know what email address that thing is tied to. DKIM et. al. security concerns aside, I don't think a mailto link will be easier to use because the web server doesn't control the user's configured handler for mailto links and there's a lot of ways for that link to go unhappy.
