If today's trends continue, such an add-on would mean 1) paying a subscription fee, 2) having to choose among a limited choice of cloud storage providers, 3) warrantless access for law enforcement, and 4) higher cost of maintenance/repair via firmware that requires visits to a dealership.

The only real question is whether the people in general have access, in addition to authorities, or whether only authorities have access. But anything else required un-inventing a lot of surveillance technology. If you get into some kind of trouble that requires going to court, you cannot contest their evidence unless you have some of your own. Having your own empowers you more than having none. As for the rest, I agree that it is unlikely to use open standards or be built to last, because only nerds care and they aren't a huge market. But it would be cool to get something like a Framework Laptop or PinePhone in the auto space. Of course, in my opinion, car culture in general was a mistake.
