Slack was IRC for it’s time. Most of the standard commands still work as testament to what market they were trying to capture. Devshop which ran dual IRC servers, TLS’d and on the WAN went to Slack. Slack also had SAML, near feature complete web interface, and an easy to swallow onramp cost in 2017.
