Apple’s New iPad Multitasking System Doesn’t Cut It
- 88840-8855 4y agoFully agree. I do not like it either and the article sums it perfectly up. The best multitasting UI has been figures out: Windows taskbar with non-minimized and non-grouping window elements in the taskbar. This gives you the ability to put any app into the foreground with only one click, you see all windows that are open, close them easily and rearrange them. Plus, you see which apps are running and which apps are closed. And finally, it is very space-saving. I wished Apple would re-invent the dock+top bar+those 3 different window managers that are running in parallel.
- senttoschool 4y agoApple shareholder here with 1/4th of my net worth in Apple stock. Apple doesn't want multitasking to get too powerful on the iPad because they want you to buy a Macbook Air/Pro and an iPad. Their strategy worked. I own a Macbook Pro 16" (previously M1 Air) and an iPad Pro M1. People need to let go of the dream of an iPad capable of doing what a Macbook Air can do in productivity. It doesn't make economic sense for Apple to do this (yet). It's possible that user behavior changes in the future and the entry-level Macbook and iPad Pro must merge into one device. But for now, it hasn't happened.
- Nextgrid 4y agoI don't understand how this meshes with their strategy of neglecting the Mac? If they want to push people to Mac, why make it worse in every iteration? The hardware got better but the software got worse in the last few years.
- senttoschool 4y agoWhat makes you think they're neglecting the Mac? I'd argue that they have put in an enormous amount of investment into the Mac in the last few years despite the fact that the Mac only makes up 10% of their revenue. They've designed the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Ultra, M2, and will likely debut an insane Mac Pro SoC soon. These are substantial investments. And they haven't stopped innovating with MacOS. They're still pushing big yearly updates despite, again, the Mac only making up 10% of their revenue. I think they're just getting started. We should see more MacOS take advantage of Apple Silicon soon.
