The article isn't about fast cars or buying houses though. It's about people sitting alone at home on their computer because they're anxious about social interaction.
They could go to the park for free with their friends. They could have friends over to their home. They could go to group events/clubs/activities at their university. They could play a board game in person.
America before 1950 was poor but social. Most of the world for all of human history has been poor but social.
This looks like the USA is heading where Japan already is. Hyper competitive academic culture leads to stressed out, isolated youth obsessed with grades and reputation. The financial aspect is part of it, it's why people care so much about coming out on top, but it's only part of the picture.

- PebblesHD 4y agoA generation of stressed out young people too tired to go out and do anything after a long day and too anxious to make noise at home because their landlord might kick them out sounds like a fairly reasonable outcome of the economic situation I described above, but I agree, it’s not the thrust of this specific article, which I think misses out on the underlying cause of the change in behaviour.
- _fat_santa 4y ago> A generation of stressed out young people too tired to go out and do anything after a long day and too anxious to make noise at home because their landlord might kick them out This is such an overt generalization. I hate the "woe is me, I work all day and my landlord sucks" narrative because it resigns you to apathy. There are many things outside of your control, but what is in your control is how your respond to them. If you come home an anxious wreck every day, that's not your bosses or your landlords fault, that's your fault.
- throwaway22032 4y agoEverything is someone else's fault. I have to live in the expensive part of the expensive city and do fancy things because I'm me, never mind whether I have money, I should have money because it's unfair if I don't. Someone else has it so I should too, except without any of the background or work.
