Where do you guys learn about using eBPF? It’d be really useful for my work, I think, but then most intros I see start with ‘Recompile the Linux distro’ or something and that just seems too much effort to get going?
- FooBarWidget 4y agoI wrote an intro for bpftrace: https://www.joyfulbikeshedding.com/blog/2019-01-31-full-system-dynamic-tracing-on-linux-using-ebpf-and-bpftrace.html https://www.joyfulbikeshedding.com/blog/2019-01-31-full-syst...
- EddySchauHai 4y agoAwesome blog overall man! I appreciate the link, working through it now :)
- yakubin 4y agoThere are two excellent books by Brendan Gregg which can teach you about eBPF: 1: Systems Performance: Enterprise and the Cloud, 2nd Edition <https://brendangregg.com/systems-performance-2nd-edition-book.html https://brendangregg.com/systems-performance-2nd-edition-boo...> 2: BPF Performance Tools <https://brendangregg.com/bpf-performance-tools-book.html https://brendangregg.com/bpf-performance-tools-book.html> Contrary to the title, I would actually recommend the first one more and only if you feel starved for more to reach for the second one. You can learn a lot about performance tools and methodologies on Linux from the first one, not just eBPF. I've never had to recompile a Linux distro to start using eBPF btw. Most distros already use a kernel compiled with options enabling eBPF. That may not be true on some "embedded Linux" devices though.
