The crash in the article was catalyzed by Autopilot rapidly decelerating in the fast lane because the system wanted to slow down due to the shadow of the bridge. The car tailgating behind obviously didn’t help. Their fault, but the author of this article completely missed things obvious to most Tesla drivers, apart from the data for the lawsuit.
On top of that, the Model 3/Y doesn’t show brake lights when using its strong regenerative brakes, which is completely unsafe. This scenario is a common problem with Autopilot and why I often don’t trust it in the left lane, despite it being a great product. Regardless of how unsafe the driver behind them was going, Tesla’s system often makes trivial mistakes.
Aside from these issues, in some states, the left lane on most interstate highways is a mix of elder statesmen who drive 55mph and modern folk who drive 75-85mph. This driving culture clash leads to serious accidents, and our laws don’t reflect what is safe. I’ve never seen a driver ticketed for driving dangerously slow in the left lane when it’s posted.
