Berry Paradox
- thriftwy 4y agoThis sounds like interesting number paradox but with unrelated stuff on top. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interesting_number_paradox https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interesting_number_paradox I can see how this could be a local meme but can not see any value in forcing it. It's too ill defined with all the pointless letter counting.
- kgwgk 4y ago> too ill defined with all the pointless letter counting Counting letters seems better defined than “interestingness”.
- dsr_ 4y agoThe problem is that human languages are not mathematically rigorous, so attempting to say something rigorous in a human language doesn't work. Consider a language where words can express multiple ideas without specifying which idea is meant; further, where new words can be coined without formal definition. (English is one such language.) I can now pack any quantity of meaning I desire into "This sentence is a gurbell." QED. Humans are inexact, and communication can be hard.
- just_boost_it 4y agoHigh praise coming from Bertrand Russell! I feel like this is probably not where his biggest contribution was though, it's essentially just a version of "this sentence is false".
