Crypto can't fix carbon offsets but crypto fans are trying anyway
- rvz 4y agoOnce again, Another garbage Verge article screeching about 'crypto's climate problem' or 'carbon offsets' in 'crypto' which has already been addressed and the emissions issues have been already solved by alternative cryptocurrencies using consensus methods such as proof-of-stake, byzantine fault tolerance, and other variants. In this article, Not even a single mention of one of the largest cryptocurrencies in the world and the biggest smart contract platform, Ethereum moving to a greener consensus method with proof-of-stake after subsequent successful deploys and tests and will abandon proof-of-work which for Ethereum's use was a waste of resources with no benefit and is burning the planet for very slow transactions. There is some action there at least, but obviously the Verge needs clicks to get the anti-crypto extremists in. So when are we exactly going to talk about the tech bros repeatedly training / retraining wasteful and broken deep learning models on tons of our user data every day which that there is absolutely NO efficient alternatives after 10+ years, and constantly requires hundreds of thousands of data centers which additionally burns tons of CO2 that not only literally caught fire but the models are primarily used for surveillance, spyware purposes which makes society worse? They won't talk about it because the Verge knows it doesn't get enough clicks for their ads. But any disaster in crypto they won't hesitate to race to publish it with corrections obviously. No matter what you think about crypto in general, an event like the Merge, from a software architecture perspective, it is fascinating and from a climate efficiency perspective, it is a win. Unlike the Deep Learning going on in the data centers, which there is NO efficient alternative for that purpose other than burn up the planet more by retraining and creating more broken models on our user data for surveillance and spyware efforts. A total waste that is.
