The Hacker's Diet, with it's heavy emphasis on calorie counting, is not sustainable. As you mention, there are too many times when it's very hard to accurately determine the number of calories of a meal - just about anytime you don't make the food yourself or buy it prepackaged with calorie information.
I did use it once, to drop down from 290 to 220, but that was by limiting myself to 1200 calories a day and very carefully counting everything that I ate. I never went back to it - even after climbing back up to 260 and then dropping down to about 175.
