I think you’re slightly confusing the right to write stories about these characters, and the right to sell your stories about these characters.
I’m not fan of copyright laws either, but this is a misrepresentation

- permo-w 4y agoit is. you’re perfectly allowed to write stories about any characters you want, doing anything you want, you’re just not allowed to sell them
- TheCoelacanth 4y agoNot just sell them; you're not allowed to share them with other people. Non-commercial fanfic often slides under the radar, but it is not legal except in the unusual case where the copyright holder has given explicit permission.
