Competitive/product eval system

Often times when I am comparing systems for a client, validating ideas, research competitors and any number of things - I throw together comparison lists. Often times they are just lists but sometimes I add scoring of some type (often in product evaluation)... This is something I usually throw together in notepad at worst or Excel at best. Surely there is a tool for this kind of thing, anyone know of one?
