Two Monkeypox Variants will no longer be Named after Regions for ethical reasons
- h2odragon 4y agoGee that's nice. Now how about telling people how to avoid infection? How about distributing the existing vaccines to people at risk? How about doing things that are effective and not performative?
- detaro 4y ago> Now how about telling people how to avoid infection? Isn't that information readily available?
- superchroma 4y agoIt's nice they're trying, but naming won't solve bigotry. COVID's cultural path was locked in stone as soon as news outlets first reported that it came from a Wuhan wet market. It didn't take an unfortunate name for monkeypox for people to get it in their minds that straight people cannot catch the disease, either.
- kristjank 4y agoWet markets were a known public health-threatening factor, and I don't see how it's not rightful to attribute the outbreak of a disease that crippled the whole planet to the repeated and continuous malpractice of a well-defined group of people.
- superchroma 4y agoI was not making a comment on wet markets or even the appropriateness of usage of geographical names in virus naming conventions, merely about the boarder goal of fighting bigotry through neutral naming.
- cato_the_elder 4y agoPolitical correctness isn't the same thing as ethics.
