Ask HN: How much is global warming costing / saving the avg US adult each year?
- rdtwo 4y agoNothing.
- superchroma 4y agoWell, to speculate: presumably some portion of taxes goes to remediation for wildfires and other weather events, and general cost of living will be higher due to power grid failures in heat, and increased pressure on some crops. People may also use air conditioning more to cope with the weather, and it will be working harder to maintain a livable temperature.
- readonthegoapp 4y agoyeah, i was kind of thinking, you save some money on heating if you're in a colder climate, but spend more on a/c in the summer. but i think it's prob important to put a number on it. like.... the average american will pay $300 more in electric bills per year, starting this year 2022, climbing $30/yr for the next... however many years we have left on earth -- say, 10 or 20. b/c when i see headlines saying, "The cost of climate change will be 1 GAZILLION dollars today, and even more each year that goes by" -- i'm like.... and? i'm not paying for it, so why should i care? at least, that's what i suspect most people think. it's just kind of an irrelevant headline for most people, i suspect, if they're just trying to pay bills, keep their job, not sink into despair, etc. if people could understand, ok, i can pay $200 in gas carbon tax this year, or $500 in electric bill tax... i think i'll take the gas carbon tax for $200, Alex. and, maybe, everyone could have a better chance of understanding that they are at an ever-increased risk of winning the global warming tax lottery -- they might lose their car / house / job / family / etc.
