I do think personal electronic vehicles (PEV) do fill a need. I have a lot of friends that use these to replace traveling short distances with a car. Like Paul noted about his friends unicycle they don't get much shit for using them. The problem with Segways I think are analogous to when I travel on the sidewalk with my bike. You're too big for most sidewalks and moving fast, so people have to hurriedly shuffle to get out of your way. It's annoying and they respond crudely. Segway I think also attracts further attention because it's a known-expensive device. It doesn't occur to most people that I paid $2k for my bike but that doesn't stop cars from being passive aggressive for, again - taking real estate from them.
