"focus time" calendar entry works pretty well. I set that along with marking my chat status as being in focus, and then will close Gmail/chat. While I don't do everything in this article, I definitely do many of them. Trying to treat chat and email as synchronous drove me a bit crazy, so I did these things a while ago. Nice to see these ideas all written down in once place.
