I don't think most manufacturers go out their way to make sure a part breaks down and it's cheaper to buy a new one. If I had something that broke after a year and can't be fixed, I certainly wouldn't buy that brand again for that item.
I think it's purely a trade off with doing its job and be cheap as possible but having a spare part available for it.
I remember reading somewhere about the cost of something in a VW engine bay, maybe an air intake box, they designed it to last X long,like the entire life span of the car, but it costs more to achieve, but it would have been cheaper to just design it for less life and if/when it did break you'd just replace the part and it's cheaper overall.
