These articles make me think that we need EU regulations (I live in EU) which force automakers to implement standards which allow the owner to replace the entertainment unit in the car. This means cars and entertainment units should be decoupled and standardised. There should be a standardized electrical interface between the car and entertainment unit together with protocol used for communication. Also the physical specs should be standard together with automatic tests used to test that car and multimedia unit works as expected.
