It's almost like some constant of retail appliances. You pay now, or you pay later. And you might pay both.
The problem is that not only is the longevity hard to assess from reputation any more, it's that replacement parts and labor are so problematic as well.
I (and others I know) have had a simple washing machine circuit panel burn out because of simple overloaded pumps, etc. (or you might experience this with a dishwasher, refrigerator, etc). Just to get the part is now several $100s, and another $150+ for any kind of labor visit.
I am rapidly thinking that home warranties where they cover a certain set of your appliances is starting to be worth it.
- bluGill 4y agoHome warranties are not worth it because they do their best to not pay. . Most home warranties are bought to sell the home, so the buyer just wants low cost and doesn't care about service at all. A home warranty with good service is possible, but it won't be cheap.
- pbuzbee 4y agoWe bought a house recently where the sellers left behind the fridge. The fridge had a handful of broken plastic shelves: things like broken clips and cracked frames. I thought it would be cheap to repair. Wrong. Fixing every broken item (~15 in all) would have cost over $400. Just for some plastic.
