What you don't see in Ukraine: competent employment of combined arms.
The A10 aircraft is specifically called out as obsolete, but it is a great bomb truck. While it may be a sitting duck for a new fast jet, a more realistic mode of employment would be to tie it in with F35s or similar when in a near peer conflict.

Of course, most conflicts are not going to be near peer, so getting rid of something as useful for armed overwatch as A10s makes little sense.
- verdverm 4y agoThe A-10 is more likely susceptible to AA systems, but the point is that they come in later, after the AA sites have been neutralized by systems like the F-22/35 and advanced anti-radar missiles. MANPADs would probably still pose a threat to them though. But as you say, these systems are intended to be part of a combined arms strategy and generally war fighting capabilities need to be applied for their intended purpose in concert to create an asymmetric advantage. This is one area where the US military is a clear leader. Other world powers have not been tested or are failing miserably like Russia.
- qbrass 4y agoThey only built 700 A-10's. They haven't been produced since the 80's, and the company that made them went out of business 20 years ago. Even if the A-10 was the right tool for the job, they should have come up with a replacement years ago just to have something they could build more of.
