Why Microsoft removed time zone world map feature from Windows (2003)
- mdmglr 4y agoThe only picture I could find of this UI is here: https://betawiki.net/wiki/Windows_95_build_216#/media/File:Win95Build216_SecondSetupTimezone.png https://betawiki.net/wiki/Windows_95_build_216#/media/File:W... Apple got away with this feature in Mac OS X onwards. But I'm guessing Apple wasn't as concerned about gov't contracts as Microsoft would be.
- TazeTSchnitzel 4y agoThe current macOS timezone selector doesn't highlight regions, so they may have bowed to pressure at some point.
- sdflhasjd 4y agoI remember the timezone map when I installed MacOS back in the days of Snow Leopard would always hit the wrong one. Trying to select 'London' would always register as one of the many cities in neighbouring counties: Paris, Dublin, Lisbon.
- Symbiote 4y agoI wonder if it's a similar reason Microsoft Windows doesn't support emoji flags. Although Taiwan having a flag shouldn't be controversial when Hong Kong and Jersey also have flags.
- Kipters 4y agoYes, that's the reason
- blagie 4y agoI think a trick might be to: - Go with geographic rather than political regions where possible - For political regions, have an alternative motive (e.g. traditional versus simplified characters for Taiwan versus Mainland China), and expressing that in a non-political way. Potentially, add a disclaimer.
- unethical_ban 4y agoStep 3 of 13: Set your username and password Step 4 of 13: Set your installation location Step 5 of 13: Select which ignorant national government rules you Step 6 of 13: Select your timezone from your government-approved map
