I was on the Google Sheets team from about 2011 to 2018 (opinions are, of course, VERY much my own). I worked in finance before that, so don't worry, I'm aware of Excel's features. One thing that I found interesting is that, over my time on Sheets, I didn't perceive much change in the volume* of "Sheets is missing critical features" criticism, but I did notice a marked difference in the features that the critics brought up.
