At work, we have a dotfile synchronization system that contains an infrastructure-level yml file of what to save, what are history files, and what to exclude. Every time a modification is made, it saves a revision. You can have multiple dotfile environments also that completely swaps them out. On the work laptop, I have google drive saving a .dotfiles dir with symlinks into them.
