Yeah, no. Bill created the one true vi, and vim is Bram Moolenaar's much extended implementation of it, another implementation being elvis.
Sorry but if an article can't get even the most basic facts right, I'm out.
- ggm 4y agoCame for this.. glad you saved me the effort. The horrible truth that Bostic's nvi was in fact a back-back-re-port out of elvis shocked me. I had believed it was the holy writ of Joy handed down to Bostic in a touching scene captured by Norman Rockwell, now hanging in the national gallery in Washington, but no. It was an attempt to re-birth back to what we wanted which was (apparently) i8n wide character support, and not much else. That said, I wish nvi had worked. I live in vim and emacs, have been in both vi and emacs since 84. I wish I could pick one and stick. Ed is still my favourite editor. (if anyone tries to tell me you can emulate vi in emacs.. I'm going to :wq out of here) Curse those AT&T Lawyers. Curse them. We could have had less LOC and less forkism, but for lawyers from phone-land. PS what I wanted was 4char tab expansion. If nvi had that, I'd stop in vim pretty much now.
