'Ring Nation' Is Amazon's Reality Show for Our Surveillance Dystopia
- pseudoramble 4y agoI'm not a user of this tech, but I imagine I would be kind of excited and kind of weirded out if I watched this show with footage from my camera. One question I have: does the show ask customers about using the footage? Would the contact or law even require them to? I'd be interested to get a sense of what those conversations are like. EDIT: according to this article (https://deadline.com/2022/08/wanda-sykes-host-syndicated-viral-video-show-ring-doorbell-technology-1235089510/ https://deadline.com/2022/08/wanda-sykes-host-syndicated-vir...) the footage is user submitted. It would still be interesting to consider if they could or are able to access that data for the show.
- daveoc64 4y agoI don't get the fuss. There are already thousands of YouTube channels (and many existing TV shows) where people submit videos of everyday things. I don't see why Amazon getting involved makes it bad.
- mhb 4y agoAt this point, it is hard to defend ownership of a Ring camera. Using fear-mongering about package theft and suburban crime, a surveillance company has convinced countless homes to affix a surveillance network node that police departments and one of the world’s largest monopolies will use to their benefit. And now they want us to laugh about it all in our (ideally) Ring-surveilled homes.
