It's like the resource curse except the resource is tourists.

Local restauranteurs are already doing their part, charging EUR300 for speciality fish dishes and one cocktail. Everyone I know who has been to Venice enjoyed it somewhere between a bit, and immensely and none of them want to go back! Meanwhile, there is a woman's prison farm on Giudecca which I think is pretty amazing. It's like somebody took Rykers Island, and converted it to hipster organic food produce. Maybe NY state could learn a trick. The resource curse and the success overload failure are interesting problems to have. A lot of eco tourism has gone directly to gated entry. Yosemite has entry limits, so maybe we have to treat Venetians like Bison.

There are no jobs except in the service sector and there's no incentive for anyone to do anything else since they can just rent apartments to tourists or open a cafe. Tourism accounts for a quarter of our GDP. We are one tanker spill or bad weather season from economic collapse.
