Its disingenuous and ridiculous that the first and most prominent benchmarks included are gaming. Granted I'm an AMD fan but most of these tests are single core heavy, and the focus is almost entirely shifted away from anything this chip was meant to do. Ignorant journalism at best.
- humanistbot 4y agoYou're reading an article by a prominent site for gamers, not professionals. Even though hardly anybody will buy a Threadripper Pro for gaming, Tom's is writing what their readers want to see. They themselves say they know it is not intended for gaming, but they "couldn't resist" showing those metrics. I bet that is what most of their readers are wanting to see too.
- Kranar 4y agoFTA: >The Threadripper Pro models aren't intended for gaming, but regardless, we couldn't resist the temptation to see how the chips fare when paired with a high-end GPU. The Threadripper chips don't impact competitive positioning in the gaming market, so consider this round of tests an exhibition/academic exercise.
- dragontamer 4y agoFunny you have this opinion. As far as I can tell, the only valid reason to go Threadripper instead of EPYC is for single core workloads like video games. If you just need a ton of IO and CPU, EPYC will likely be better for you.
