New Google site begs Apple for mercy in messaging war
- ggeorgovassilis 4y agoI'm proudly not using Apple products, but I have no sympathy for Google here. Google's first messenger, Google Talk was a robust, cross-platform product which always made sure messages arrived (many others like Skype or MS messenger couldn't get that simple tenet right), didn't require a phone number and could be used from multiple devices. But then there was hangout, now chat, and each new product has been a step back from the previous one. The protracted demise of Hangouts didn't boost confidence in the product strategy either.
- i67vw3 4y agoGoogle is too be solely blamed for it. Pretty much all android users prefer Whatsapp, Line, Wechat etc compared to traditional SMS. They could have had one proper chat application rather than having 10 of them in this decade alone. They are doing the same thing right now with Google Meet/Duo. While iOS users prefer imessage, SMS, over other messaging services like Whatsapp.
- WhyNotHugo 4y agoSounds like Google is just crying that its Messaging platforms have been more of a failure than Apple's (at least in the US, since iMessages is rarely used outside the US anyway). Google has had plenty of messengers, none of which interoperates with third parties either. But now they complain that Apples does the same that Google has always done. And their cry is for Apple to adopt RCS, a broken standard pushed mostly by Google and partners. I'll rarely defend Apple (and I'm not really doing so here either), but it seems like Google is trying to gain some sympathy here, and just trying to spin the facts in a light where they sound like the victim -- when they've had the exact same behaviour as Apple since forever.

- bell-cot 4y agoSuggested Apple Counter-offer: Replace the Google exec's responsible for their messaging s*it-show with new exec's appointed by Tim Cook. Those new exec's will have authority over all relevant Google people & resources, report only to Tim Cook, and be paid by Google - at rates set by Tim Cook.
