  I disagree. What matters is your BATNA, or perceived BATNA. I've been able to negotiate great compensation multiple times after taking an extended break and not being actively employed.

    Yes, but being employed raises your BATNA, so theoretically, all else being equal, it's better to be employed when looking for a new job.
