I take a long, hard look at the adorable two year old I surprisingly got pregnant with at 40… and still believe that no one should have go through with a pregnancy they don’t want, no matter how young/old/healthy/slutty they are. We had wanted a child for over a decade, but outside of an early ectopic pregnancy (was lucky to catch it early enough to terminate it with Methotrexate instead of having to do surgery), it looked like it was a good thing I was content to be an aunt. I never resented those unknown young women who “took the easy way out” instead of birthing a baby for a nice, professional couple like us to adopt.
Women who go through with unwanted pregnancies and then give up the babies for adoption are heroes, and deserve more support, during and AFTER - the physical effects of even a “normal” pregnancy can be life-long. I still have a ton of back pain (not helped by lifting 30 lbs of often uncooperative toddler), and the toes on my right foot are slowly getting number. Other than the age thing, I had a very healthy, normal pregnancy.

She was a family planning campaigner at the time (campaigning for access to contraception - a hot issue at the time) and was quite embarrassed. Throughout my childhood my mother was an active and prominent campaigner for the right of women to control their own bodies. There is no doubt that I would have been aborted. I am very glad I wasn't, I love life. But I absolutely support the right of women to end their pregnancies legally and safely. Justice.
