Small businesses count cost of Apple’s privacy changes
- GekkePrutser 4y agoGreat. It means Facebook's targeting algorithms really can't do their job anymore. It's really time for Android phone manufacturers to follow suit (I mean it will probably have to come from them as Google will likely not cooperate). I feel a bit bad for the businesses. But they'll just have to go and change. Find more local publications if they're a regional shop/service, or find platforms where their niche hangs out if they're online. Also, Facebook could make advertising cheaper, if now the cost of acquiring a customer is no longer worthwhile without targeting, this cost should just come down. I also assume this is mainly US niche companies, as Apple in the rest of the world (a few smaller countries aside) has a much smaller marketshare in the phone market. It's strange that this article was posted verbatim on Ars Technica. I assume both publications are part of Conde Nast, but Ars Technica normally has an editorship much more sensitive to privacy issues. This article does not mention the improvement on customer privacy at all and instead only focuses on the loss of advertising effectiveness, as you would expect a financial times article to do. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/small-businesses-count-cost-of-apples-privacy-changes/ https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/08/small-businesses-cou... But it's not the first time I've noticed that. I used to be an Ars Pro++ subscriber but I cancelled my membership as I felt the quality went down and they were becoming too mainstream. Over the last year and a half I went from checking it daily to once a month or so.
