"The software industry has been doing daily stand-ups for so long that it doesn’t remember why they exist"
I've been a professional developer at one major software company after another (including ones that have tried SCRUM) since the '90s, and never heard the term "stand-up" at work until last year. That's a broadcast-news term as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe they've been doing them but not calling them that.

I worked at medium to large tech co. since late 90s, and only team leads attended regular meetings. Normal devs only attended very infrequent all-hands meeting (monthly at small companies, or quarterly at large). Of-course we had meetings, but they weren't dailies, but with specific agenda (e.g. design review, bugs, org. announcement, HR, etc.)
