Similar experience. We have 2 meetings per week, all in the same day. The rest is intra-teams communication without management butting in. Everyone is extremely productive. Why people think that daily standups are useful is beyond me. 95% of the things in the 2 weekly team meetings that we have is already useless for most people (but having everyone there is useful since otherwise you're just waiting to ping someone to respond, you zone out anyway if the topic is not to your relevance).
