As a heavy user of both, may I suggest the answer lies right in your post: "personally" :) I like not leaving the home row. That's possible with a pad or ball,

I like not leaving the home row. That's possible with a pad or ball, but then you have to use your thumbs. My index finger is much more dexterous.
