An 8088, or anything manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation, might classify as a "very old machine" but something that's barely a decade old certainly doesn't.
- Ekaros 4y agoI probably would draw line of old to somewhere Pentium 4. Very old maybe Pentium or 2. Anything Core and beyond is not that old. Slow for current waste of resources, but not really old.
- seiferteric 4y agoLol I thought it would be a 386/486 at least, its a Sandy Bridge! But that just reflects my age really...
- ansible 4y agoOne of my current desktops is an Ivy Bridge i7. It isn't that fast anymore, but with 32GB of RAM, it isn't too bad. I could really use some more cores for parallel builds though. Might be time to upgrade.
- seiferteric 4y agoMy current desktop is an i7-3770 Ivy Bridge as well, though admittedly I only use it for occasional gaming now and use laptops for work/browsing.
- rvdginste 4y agoMy current desktop is an i7-970: first generation i7, but hexa-core. It was the first time I bought a higher-end cpu and I've never regretted that. I also got it with 24GB RAM. Since then I upgraded both the graphics card and the disk (from WD Raptor to SSD). It's still very usable: it's for personal use and fast enough for browsing, development, and some (older) games.
- userbinator 4y agoIndeed, my daily driver (2nd gen Nehalem) is older, and it's more than fast enough except for the rare times I have to step foot into the world of JS and the bloated web.
- dunham 4y agoThe "old" machine I played around with in high school (an H11) had an LSI-11 processor and 8" floppy drives. I think my dad still has it in his attic. He also reacquired my first computer, which was an obscure 8080A machine ("Interact") with a tape drive.
- snoopy_telex 4y agoI'm still using my 2012 MBP as my daily driver...
- taylodl 4y agoSame here! But it’s coming to end of life. Not too bad for a refurb!
