Startup wants to copy you into an embryo for organ harvesting
- JPLeRouzic 4y agoMy daughters probably think I am an old guy with outdated ideas, but that's not how I think of myself. Yet I find what is described as the goal of this startup as absolutely dystopian and evil.
- theplumber 4y ago>> Yet I find what is described as the goal of this startup as absolutely dystopian and evil. Why?
- more_corn 4y agoA clone is legally and ethically equivalent to a twin brother. You’re creating a twin so you can harvest his organs. The fact that the embryos are not currently viable long-term is a technicality. Create new life. Label it other via technicality, harvest it for your own purposes. Evil.
- theplumber 4y agoI will clone it brain dead. Is it still evil?

- sneak 4y ago> Create new life. Label it other via technicality, harvest it for your own purposes. How is this different from planting crops? (Assuming you don't consider agriculture "evil".)
- LorenPechtel 4y agoIt depends on what you consider a person. To me the unique feature of humanity is the brain. Functioning brain, it gets rights. No functioning brain, it's just tissue. And they're not proposing to take it far enough along that there is a functioning brain. Thus I have no problem with it.
- greenhearth 4y agoAccording to Friedrich Schelling, true evil is the actualization of what should remain only a pure possibility, the actual bringing about of what should only exist in discourse. And here we have an example par excellence.

- luxuryballs 4y agoAldous Huxley looks more like a prophet every year.
- schwartzworld 4y agoYou say that now, but you won't complain when you have epsilons mowing your lawn.
- cuttysnark 4y ago> your lawn. My self-control has kept me free from the dependencies that create the conditions for having a lawn or needing it mowed. - djohnston 4y agoIf it doesn't have a brain I'd be cool w/ it
- theideaofcoffee 4y agoI hope my embryo is birthed and allowed to grow up for a few years, preferably in large, underground towers in the middle of the desert. Whereupon they are gifted a vacation to a nice resort on the sea.
- dayglo 4y agoWhat film is this ??
- skunkworker 4y agoThe Island directed by Michael Bay.
- bitwize 4y agoWow, we're already at Parts: The Clonus Horror. Good job, civilization.

- Spivak 4y agoFor the people in this thread who have the “this is dystopian” take, how do you resolve that humans are just fine with raising cows, chickens, pigs just to harvest their flesh? It’s probably also best not to think about what we put lab rats through. If anything doing this for medical reasons is a way more ethically justifiable reason than chicken nuggets. What makes humans so special that growing a 50 day embryo, not even a person by pro-choice standards, is terrible?
- WillAdams 4y agoAn embry has the potential to become a person. As McCoy said on _Star Trek_, "I will not peddle flesh." Either people are unique and to be valued, or they are commodities to be bought and sold. It's also a technology which will widen the gaps between the haves and the have-nots.
- jelliclesfarm 4y agoNone of these cloned embryos will be viable. They are harvesting cells. Not organs. Clickbait title. Misleading.
