i used the TECO init file version, it was on Multics. at that stage, i actually preferred "command line" TECO to visual TECO, keeping the abstract visualization in my head led to fluid authoring of edit commands, where looking at the screen with the cursor caret it was too easy to be distracted by material away from the point.
