Did you try using safe mode? I've had a similar problem and I figured out it was caused by an addon.

  I'll try that. If an addon is causing that I may switch back.

    I tried and it worked. Then I disabled extensions one by one and found the culprit. Firefox is back as my default browser. Feels like I am back home. :D
